Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT combines elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and eastern philosophical concepts such as mindfulness and acceptance.   This “dialectical” approach, meaning that it integrates two seemingly disparate ideas (i.e., acceptance vs. change), was initially developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. and designed to specifically treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).   DBT has proven effective in reducing the anger, identity disturbance, abandonment fears, and self-harm behaviors found in this condition.  Studies have also shown that DBT is helpful for other populations, including individuals who have experienced trauma or abuse, as well as individuals with substance abuse issues and eating disorders. DBT is based… READ MORE ›

Psychological Testing Division

The psychological assessment services offered at NBI are designed to facilitate understanding of how individuals function and learn by using reliable neuropsychological, educational, and psychodiagnostic tests. An evaluation is most helpful when a learning disability, developmental delay, intellectual disability, or other cognitive problem (e.g., difficulty with memory, attention, or executive functioning skills, such as organization or planning) is suspected. A comprehensive evaluation may also be helpful for individuals struggling with behavioral, social or emotional difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression, etc.) that seem to be interfering with social, cognitive, or academic functioning. Such evaluations may offer diagnostic clarity and related treatment recommendations.… READ MORE ›

The process of individual psychological treatment, commonly termed psychotherapy, begins with a consultation. The consultation usually is completed within one meeting but under some circumstances may require extended time. During the consultation, legal and ethical boundaries of confidentiality are reviewed. Information regarding the reason for referral, background, general health, and treatment history is obtained. This is followed by a thorough clinical evaluation about psychological, behavioral, and social factors. Treatment goals are specified and agreed upon.
