Executive Functioning: The Missing Link in Effective Treatment

Successful treatment relies on executive functioning (EF) skills such as planning, organization, task initiation, follow-through, emotional regulation, and cognitive flexibility. Yet many individuals entering behavioral health treatment struggle in these areas, creating barriers to treatment engagement, skill implementation, and long-term progress. This presentation will provide an overview of executive functioning and its role in treatment participation, helping clinicians identify key EF domains that may interfere with progress when left unaddressed.

The presentation will also review the core mechanisms underlying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and examine the complex relationship between EF deficits and OCD symptoms. Participants will learn how to identify relevant assessment targets, recognize how executive functioning challenges can contribute to symptom maintenance and treatment barriers, and develop practical treatment strategies that strengthen EF skills to improve engagement, generalization, and overall clinical outcomes.
