TREATMENT FOR BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER (BDD) IN WESTON
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is listed in DSM-5 as an OCD Related Condition. This condition is characterized by an overwhelming preoccupation with a trivial or non-existent fault in one’s physical appearance. Similar to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), those with BDD also experience obsessions and compulsions. It is a misconception that those with BDD are “vain” or “making things up". People with this condition are suffering from true perceptual problems.
What Are the Symptoms of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)?
Those struggling with BDD experience many challenges in their daily lives due to their fixation on a supposed defect in their appearance. Many sufferers may avoid contact with other people, abstain from attending social events, and may even find it difficult to function in everyday activities like attending school or work.
Symptoms of BDD can include:
-
Separation Anxiety Disorder
-
Selective Mutism
-
Specific Phobia
-
Social Phobia
-
Panic Disorder
-
Agoraphobia
-
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
BDD is a serious condition but treatment is possible. At the Neurobehavioral Institute, our Weston Body Dysmorphic Disorder therapists specialize in anxiety-related disorders.
