NBI Ranch 2020

NBI Ranch 2020

We’re celebrating two years since our doors opened at NBI Ranch. As many of you know, the Ranch is the culmination of our twenty-year dream of adding a residential component to Neurobehavioral Institute’s (NBI’s) well-known OCD and anxiety-related disorders outpatient intensive treatment program.

NBI Ranch is designed to address an unmet need for more high-quality resources offering residential support for adults with OCD and anxiety-related disorders with severe or very complex symptoms which necessitate more than outpatient care but at the same time do not merit hospitalization—a residence that integrates seamlessly with assessment and intensive treatment services.

At NBI Ranch, we’ve created such a place with just enough but not too much structure. The doors are unlocked but there’s a well-trained 24-hour awake staff of residential counselors (RCs) that not only ensure safety and lend a caring ear, but actively encourage practicing and generalizing what is being learned in ongoing treatment at the nearby NBI center.

The Ranch also offers a variety of fun-in-the-sun and social opportunities to its residents, as well as social skills and self-care support for those who need it. We consider one of our major jobs to be showing our clients how life can be fun and exciting again!

As NBI is an evidence-supported practice, the RCs collect behavioral change data, under the direction of board-certified applied behavior analysts (ABA’s). This information is utilized by our clinical team on a day-to day basis to assess progress and modify treatment plans in “real-time.” Strong family and parenting support is another key aspect of our program from its inception.

Over the last two years, NBI Ranch has blossomed. As the Ranch has grown, the best part is that we have been able to help individuals and families more than ever. Some of our Ranch graduates have returned to their homes and are “living their lives.” Others have gone onto to other programs to further work on self-regulation, find direction, or to address other significant symptoms or problems.

Additionally, we are now able to offer a step up or down from other facilities. Of course, not everyone improves as much as hoped for, and this spurs us on to always seek ways to improve our services and outcomes. Just recently, members of our staff completed extensive formal DBT training and a neurologist joined our team as well.

As we begin 2020, we want to take this opportunity to thank the referring clinicians, educational consultants and treatment centers that continue to entrust us to provide the most effective treatment and supportive residential experience possible. We have learned a lot from our membership in the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) and everyone who has given us feedback regarding what we can do even better. Keep it coming!

We could not be on this journey without our 10 licensed psychologists, post-doctoral fellows, dietician, executive function coaches, behavior therapists, residential counselors, administrative staff and our many dedicated NBI Ranch team members, so enormous gratitude to all of you as well.

Looking forward, with your continued support, to the further growth and evolution of NBI Ranch. Wishing everyone all the best!

Most Sincerely,

Katia Moritz, PhD, ABPP & Jonathan Hoffman, PhD, ABPP
